DYK ‘Palat’ scene in DDLJ was inspired by Hollywood film?

Shah Rukh Khan's 'Palat' scene in 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge' was inspired by a Hollywood film, Aditya Chopra admits

Thirty years on, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’s iconic ‘Palat’ scene, where Raj bets Simran’s love on her turning back, has a surprising Hollywood origin. Director Aditya Chopra revealed in a book that the memorable moment was inspired by a similar exchange in Clint Eastwood’s 1993 film, In the Line of Fire, showcasing a fascinating cross-cultural cinematic influence.

Aditya Chopra’s ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ is one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic films, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in the lead roles. As the movie completes 30 years this month, one popular scene continues to capture audiences’ imagination—the iconic ‘Palat’ sequence. In this scene, Raj (played by SRK) talks to himself, saying that if Simran (played by Kajol) turns back, it means she loves him. Of course, Simran eventually turns around. But did you know that Aditya Chopra took inspiration for this scene from a similar moment in Clint Eastwood’s 1993 Hollywood film ‘In the Line of Fire’?

How Aditya Chopra drew inspiration from Clint Eastwood

In the Hollywood film, as Rene Russo’s character Lilly Raines starts to walk away from Clint Eastwood’s Frank Horrigan, he says, “If she looks back, that means she is interested.”The lines are strikingly similar. However, in DDLJ, Raj is portrayed as a hopeless romantic, while in the Hollywood film, Frank delivers the line as a casual observation about women. In the book Aditya Chopra Relives Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Chopra confessed that Raj’s ‘Palat’ scene was inspired by the Eastwood sequence. He wrote that the Hollywood scene stayed with him after watching it and came to mind while writing DDLJ.
