Thamma mints Rs 24 crore on day 1 at the box office

Thamma box office day 1: The Ayushmann Khurrana-Rashmika Mandanna starrer mints Rs 24 crore

Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna’s ‘Thamma’ has stormed the box office, raking in an impressive Rs 24.87 crore on its opening day. The film, inspired by Indian folklore and not Western vampire tales, is expected to dominate the Diwali weekend with minimal competition. Ayushmann clarified the movie’s theme revolves around ‘betaals’ from Indian mythology, with the title derived from Ashwatthama.

Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna’s Thamma has opened to an impressive start at the box office, minting Rs 24 crore on its first day. The strong opening suggests solid audience interest and sets a promising tone for the film’s Diwali weekend run.

Early numbers and competition

As per the latest update from Sacnilk, Thamma has earned Rs 24.87 crore by 10 PM. The film is expected to keep up its strong performance through the weekdays, as it currently has no major competition at the box office. The only other Diwali release was Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat. The last major Hindi theatrical release was Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor’s Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, which had to compete with the Kannada film Kantara Chapter 1.

Occupancy trends across shows

Thamma recorded a 13.92 percent occupancy rate for its morning shows. Attendance picked up in the afternoon, rising to 21.22 percent, while the evening shows saw an occupancy of 19.98 percent.

Ayushmann clarifies the film’s theme

In an interview with Bollywood Bubble, Ayushmann Khurrana shared that ‘Thamma’ is about betaals and not vampires. For the unversed, a betaal is an evil spirit in Indian mythology that haunts cremation grounds and takes demonic possession of corpses. Speaking about the movie, the actor said, “Hum isko bolte hain betaalism (We call this Betalism). Betaal hai, vampire nahi (It’s betaal and not vampire).”The actor cleared the confusion by stating that the concept of the movie has not been inspired by Western tales but by Indian folklore. He said, “It’s based in Indian folklore. ‘Thamma’ humare film ka naam hai; Ashvatthama se iska (Our film’s title is ‘Thamma’, which has been derived from Ashwatthama).”He further added, “Thamma from Ashvatthama, Dinesh Vijan hain yeh. Unhone ne idea nikala, and the most powerful betaal is Thamma (Dinesh Vijan has thought of this idea, and hence the most powerful betaal is Thamma).”DISCLAIMER: The box office numbers in this article are compiled from our proprietary sources and diverse public data.
