Security forces launched a massive anti-terror operation in the Dharni Top area of Udhampur district’s Basantgarh region after locals reported sightings of armed men moving through the area on Tuesday.

According to officials, three suspected terrorists were seen by residents, carrying weapons and wearing green and black jackets with high-ankle boots.

Following the alert, the Indian Army and Jammu & Kashmir Police jointly launched cordon and search operations in the dense forested terrain.

The area has been sealed off, and additional reinforcements have been rushed to the site to prevent any escape routes.

Security forces are conducting door-to-door searches and area domination patrols.

Senior officials said the operation is ongoing and that all intelligence inputs are being verified to determine the origin and movement of the suspected group.

For long, Pakistan has been infiltrating highly trained terrorists into Jammu and Kashmir, many of whom possess advanced jungle warfare skills.

Unlike earlier patterns of militancy centred around urban areas, these militants now choose to engage security forces in remote, forested, and mountainous regions, making counter-operations far more challenging.

Such encounters often lead to gunfights and higher casualties among security personnel, as clearing dense jungles requires extensive troop deployment and coordinated search operations in difficult terrain.

During operation Akhal, launched on August 1, the intelligence inputs were about a large group of terrorists hiding in the area.

In the initial exchange of fire near the foothills, one local militant was neutralised.

However, as the encounter moved deeper into the forest, well-entrenched Pakistani terrorists engaged the forces from multiple locations, significantly complicating the operation.
