Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that a case will be filed against individuals attempting to stir unrest in the state after the death of iconic singer Zubeen Garg, noting that he will not let a Nepal-like situation prevail in the state.

He said that some people, including Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President and Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi, attempted to instigate violence, and they will be dealt with legal action.

In a tweet, Sarma wrote: “Certain elements, including the President of @INCAssam attempted to instigate violence and unrest following the demise of #BelovedZubeen. Assam Government will take action against those trying to foment trouble in the midst of a tragedy.”

It comes after Gogoi allegedly claimed that “if a singer like Garg had died in another state, the shops and other establishments would have been burnt down,” a remark the Chief Minister said could incite violence.

Speaking to the media, Sarma said, “I do not know what enmity Gaurav Gogoi has against shop owners, but I will not tolerate any attempts to create a Nepal-like situation in Assam.”

He also dismissed Gogoi’s reported political ambitions to become Assam CM in 2026, questioning, “Would any officer visit a CM residence where three out of four members are foreigners?”

The Chief Minister stressed that any efforts to incite unrest in the name of Zubeen Garg would face strict legal action, sending a clear warning against provocations in the state.

In response, Gogoi alleged that the Chief Minister was obstructing the investigation and trying to tarnish Zubeen Garg’s reputation rather than ensuring a fair probe.

“There is no decorum left in their statements anymore. Instead of raising questions on the departed soul and showing force through the police, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has no other option left. They have forgotten that people are still going through a deep shock. They are so afraid of losing power that humanity itself has been cast aside,” Gogoi said.
