Maharashtra is all set to roll out a new wave of short-term, job-oriented skill courses that aim to equip the youth with emerging technical skills and enhance their employability. The initiative, part of the state’s Skill, Employment, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation Department, will be formally launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 8 when he arrives in the city.

Minister for skill development Mangal Prabhat Lodha confirmed that all preparations for the launch event are complete. He said the new courses are designed to meet industry demands and future employment trends, especially in technology-driven sectors. The curriculum includes a diverse range of subjects such as additive manufacturing, drone technology, electric vehicles, solar energy, cybersecurity, Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), green hydrogen, mobile repair, and social media influencing. “The focus is on creating employment-ready youth who can contribute effectively to fast-evolving industries,” Lodha said.

The programme, titled ‘Short-Term Employable Skill Courses’, marks a major step towards decentralising skill education across Maharashtra. In its first phase, training sessions will be conducted in 419 government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and 141 government technical schools, amounting to 2,506 training batches across the state. According to Lodha, the initiative aims to train 75,000 youth this year, with the target expected to rise to one lakh trainees from next year. “Our mission is to make every young person industry-ready. These courses are practical, focused, and aligned with local employment needs,” he said.

A key highlight of the launch will be the participation of members from the Vishwakarma community, local artisans, and experts from traditional trades, who will be invited as chief guests at various centres to symbolically represent India’s skilled workforce. The state has also taken a conscious step toward inclusivity. There will be 364 special batches for women candidates and 408 dedicated batches for emerging sectors like green energy and AI. Additionally, special training centres are planned in Gadchiroli, Latur, Nagpur, and Amravati, tailored to the specific industrial requirements of these regions.

In a unique move, the department will introduce a course titled ‘Vedic Sanskar Junior Assistant’ in Nashik, keeping in mind the upcoming Kumbh Mela, where traditional knowledge and cultural management skills will play a significant role. The minister said the initiative aims to bridge the gap between education and employability, ensuring that skill development reaches even remote areas. “These courses are not just about training; they are about empowerment. We want our youth to be confident, capable, and self-reliant,” Lodha emphasised.

As Maharashtra readies for PM Modi’s launch, the programme is being viewed as a transformative step in reshaping the state’s workforce—connecting traditional craftsmanship with modern technology, and preparing young minds for the jobs of tomorrow.
