Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday directed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to prepare a detailed feasibility report on building a tunnel to connect Mumbai with the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.

According to a statement from Shinde’s office, the airport, set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will have the capacity to handle up to two crore passengers annually.

With traffic expected to surge once operations begin, existing road links are likely to fall short, prompting the government to explore new connectivity options.

Shinde stressed the need for an integrated transport network linking the airport to suburban rail, Metro corridors, and waterways.

“To ensure seamless movement, the deputy chief minister has instructed the MMRDA Commissioner to study the feasibility of constructing a tunnel connecting the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and Bandra Kurla Complex to the Navi Mumbai Airport,” the statement said.

In addition, Shinde has asked officials to examine the potential integration of the upcoming high-speed rail line with key regional transit points, including the Mhatardi bullet train station in Thane, Kopar railway station, and the Taloja Metro station.

The Mhatardi station, currently under construction in Diva, is envisioned as an integrated transport hub serving bullet trains, suburban rail, Metro lines, and major highways — a move aimed at boosting multimodal connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
