India on Monday reiterated its strong backing for free, fair, and inclusive elections in Bangladesh, urging that the polls be held at the earliest.
The statement came from Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who underscored New Delhi’s readiness to work with any government chosen through a democratic process.

“I want to be very, very clear on this one matter, if there is any doubt in anybody’s mind , India is firmly in favour of free, fair, inclusive, and participatory elections in Bangladesh. And we believe these elections should take place at the earliest possible time,” Misri said at a press briefing.
The foreign secretary welcomed recent statements from Dhaka about holding elections soon, expressing optimism that the process would move forward without delay.
“We are encouraged by the fact that Bangladeshi authorities themselves have indicated a time frame for the elections, and we look forward to them being conducted as scheduled,” he said, as quoted by ANI.
Misri reaffirmed that India’s engagement with Bangladesh would continue irrespective of the political outcome.
“We will engage with whichever government the people of Bangladesh elect through a democratic mandate,” he said, adding that India’s approach to the neighbouring country remains pragmatic and grounded in long-term cooperation.
The foreign secretary also stressed the importance of maintaining a positive and stable environment for the electoral process.
“For this relationship to grow stronger, it is essential that both sides avoid statements or actions that could vitiate the atmosphere,” Misri said, hinting at recent tensions in political discourse.
Highlighting India’s ongoing outreach, Misri noted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s gesture of welcoming Professor Muhammad Yunus as Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government.
“The Prime Minister was among the first world leaders to congratulate Professor Yunus and invited him to participate in the Voice of Global South Summit. We were pleased that he accepted the invitation,” he said.

Acknowledging international interest in Bangladesh’s democratic transition, Misri said the developments were being closely followed across the region and beyond.
“We have all seen the statements regarding the next elections in Bangladesh. I understand a time frame for February has been indicated, and we look forward to seeing it implemented,” he added.
India’s remarks come amid heightened attention on Bangladesh’s internal political situation, as the country prepares for a crucial electoral transition expected to shape its regional and international partnerships in the months ahead.
