Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday announced that her government will approach the Supreme Court seeking permission to allow the use of green firecrackers during Diwali in the national capital.

Speaking about the move, Gupta said the government will submit its written stand before the apex court and request permission for the use of certified green firecrackers. These firecrackers, she added, would comply with all government regulations to ensure public safety and environmental protection.

“While respecting the sentiments of Delhi residents, the Delhi government will make this request to the Hon’ble Supreme Court that permission be granted for the use of certified green firecrackers (Green Firecrackers) on this Diwali,” the Delhi chief minister wrote in a post on X.

She emphasised the need to balance tradition and environmental protection. “The objective of this initiative is to further strengthen our commitment to pollution control while honoring traditions,” she said.

Gupta also assured that all green firecrackers would be manufactured only by authorised institutions and certified by the relevant authorities. “It will also be ensured that all green firecrackers are manufactured only by authorized institutions and have been certified and tested by competent and relevant departments.”

Concluding her statement, the Chief Minister said, “The Delhi government is fully committed to environmental protection and pollution control with complete dedication. The Hon’ble Supreme Court will be assured that the Delhi government will fully comply with all guidelines and standards of the court.”

Currently, all kinds of firecrackers are banned in Delhi as per court orders, due to concerns over rising air pollution levels.
