According to Dr Rajkumar (Kayakalp Herbal Clinic, Rishikesh), Ayurveda warns against drinking water right after meals. It dilutes digestive juices, slowing digestion and leading to heaviness, gas, or indigestion.

Drinking a lot of water just before eating can make you feel full, reduce your appetite, and result in poor nutritional intake. Ayurveda recommends avoiding excess water before meals for better nourishment.

Ayurveda suggests drinking water about 30 minutes after meals. This helps digestion and ensures better absorption. If you prefer cold water, wait 20–30 minutes post meal. Between meals, water can be taken 1–2 hours before or after eating.

Ayurveda recommends sipping water in small amounts instead of drinking it all at once. This helps the body absorb it better and avoids disturbing digestion. Warm water is even more beneficial—it relaxes stomach muscles and supports faster digestion.
