First Karwa Chauth Guide: Karwa Chauth is one of the most significant days for married Hindu women in the northern and western parts of India. Celebrated annually during Krishna Paksha Chaturthi in the Hindu month of Kartik, this festival holds immense spiritual and emotional significance. Women observe a day-long fast, where they abstain from both food and water from sunrise to moonrise for the long life and well-being of their husbands.

The Karva Chauth fast is completed after sighting the moon and offering water and prayers to the moon god. Once done, women break their fast after their husband offers them water and the first bite of food. This year, Karwa Chauth will be celebrated on October 10.

If you are observing Karwa Chauth for the first time, you must keep the fast with complete dedication. To help you avoid making mistakes, we’ve curated a list of dos, don’ts and how you can make it special.

Karwa Chauth Tips

  1. High-Protein Sargi: The pre-dawn meal, Sargi, must include high-protein foods like nuts and milk products and carbs like oats, quinoa, and brown rice for the nutrient boost required to sustain the entire day.
  2. Take breaks when needed: Do not overwork. Get up and move around, but make sure you take short breaks whenever you feel a little low on energy. In this way, you can save energy for the entire work hours.
  3. Consider partial fasting if needed: If you feel low on energy, do not force yourself to observe a fast completely. Sip on energy-boosting drinks like ORS, glucose, or saline water (salt and sugar mixed in water) if you need hydration.
  4. Light and comfortable fabrics: Opt for lightweight fabrics like georgette, chiffon, or cotton silk instead of heavy sarees or lehengas. These materials are more breathable and comfortable to wear throughout a long workday while still looking festive.
  5. Break the fast with water: Working women should break the fast with water instead of food items. That is because the body needs hydration first and then other nutrient absorption. You can opt for light snacks or fruits and have a proper meal after some time.

Karwa Chauth 2025: Mistakes To Avoid

  1. Women observing the fast should avoid caffeine and alcohol, as these substances can dehydrate you.
  2. During the festival, you should not wear black or white clothes. Opt for red or yellow colour outfits that look festive and infuse positive energy.
  3. Avoid fried food while breaking the Karwa Chauth fast, as it may upset your stomach. As a result, it may lead to bloating, loose motions, and gastric irritability.
  4. Women observing the fast should start their day with sargi. This will help you stay energetic throughout the day
  5. According to beliefs, women keeping fast should also avoid using sharp items like knives, needles, and scissors on this day.

Karwa Chauth 2025: How To Make It Special

Mehendi is a symbol of good fortune, a happy married life and prosperity. So, married women should apply henna/mehndi a day prior to the festival.

Before the puja, women should adorn themselves with solah shringar items, the things that signify your marriage, such as a mangal sutra, bindi, bichiya, sindoor, bangles, etc.
