A short circuit triggered a massive fire in the ICU of SMS Hospital Trauma Centre late on Sunday night, leading to the death of eight critical patients. 11 patients were being treated in the ICU.

The families of the victims recounted harrowing experiences and alleged major lapses. It was also alleged that the hospital staff had fled after the fire broke out.

Om Prakash, whose 25-year-old maternal aunt’s son was admitted, recounted the tragedy and told ANI, “Smoke started spreading around 11:20 PM, and I warned the doctors that it could cause discomfort to patients. By the time the smoke intensified, the doctors and compounders had already fled. Only 4 to 5 patients were evacuated. Tragically, my maternal aunt’s son lost his life due to the incident. He was about to recover and was scheduled to be discharged in two-three days.”

The Rajasthan government on Monday constituted a 6-member committee to investigate the fire. Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma visited the Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital following the fire outbreak.

As per the order by the Office of the Secretary to the Government, Medical Education Department, the committee will investigate the causes of the fire, the hospital management’s arrangements for controlling the fire, the firefighting arrangements at the Trauma Center and SMS Hospital, the safety and evacuation of patients in case of a fire, and the arrangements to protect the hospital from such fires in the future and prevent recurrence of such accidents.
