Amid the ongoing probe into the deaths of children linked to the consumption of cough syrup in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara, officials have arrested Dr Praveen Soni following the registration of an FIR against him. The case is linked to the deaths of 14 children allegedly caused by Coldrif cough syrup, which was reportedly prescribed illegally by Dr Soni.

The complaint has been filed against Sresan Pharmaceuticals and Dr Soni under BNS 276, BNS 105, and Section 27A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act for their alleged role in the tragedy.
According to District Magistrate Harendra Narayan, a preliminary investigation has revealed shocking findings about the medicine in question.
“We are taking strict legal action. Tests have shown that the substance in the syrup, which should have been within a 1 per cent limit, contained 48.6 per cent, making it highly toxic. Such a high level would be dangerous not just for children, but even for adults,” he told CNN-News18.
Cough Syrup Death: MP CM Announces Rs 4 Lakh Ex-Gratia For Family
In the aftermath of the deaths, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each for the families of the deceased children.
Earlier on Saturday, Senior Congress leader Kamal Nath said the Madhya Pradesh government must give Rs 50 lakh each as financial assistance to families in Chhindwara that lost a child due to kidney failure after consuming adulterated cough syrup.
The statement from Nath, a former chief minister and current MLA from Chhindwara, came after the Mohan Yadav government sanctioned Rs 4 lakh each as compensation to families of the 14 deceased.
Cough Syrup Death: 18 Children Die Across Two States
So far 18 deaths have been reported across Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan in connection with the consumption of cough syrup. 14 children were reported dead in MP’s Chhindwara, one in Rajasthan’s Sikar, two in Bharatpur, and one in the Churu district of Rajasthan.
