The shocking and untimely death of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has taken an unexpected and disturbing turn, with CID Assam probing a possible financial motive behind his death.

The probe team is investigating that financial pressure could be one of the reasons that led to Garg’s death under mysterious circumstances. One of the key aspects under probe is the nature of Zubeen’s financial dealings and whether any tensions erupted between him and his manager, Siddharth Sharma, over financial matters.

Investigators are currently probing whether such differences, if proven, could have escalated into something more sinister.

As per sources, the Assam CID has begun questioning individuals from Zubeen’s inner circle, including his relative, Sandipan Garg, and his fellow singer, Sweety.

Was Zubeen Garg Poisoned?

Earlier today, the late singer’s bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami alleged that Zubeen’s manager Siddharth and North East India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta may have poisoned him and conspired to cover up his death as accidental.

Goswami further alleged that Sharma instructed him not to share any videos from the yacht and took control of the vessel himself, causing it to wobble dangerously. He also stated that Sharma insisted on personally supplying liquor for the outing, instructing organisers not to arrange drinks on their own—an act that raised serious suspicion about what was served to Garg that day.

During Garg’s final moments, when he was gasping for breath and frothing from his mouth and nose, Sharma allegedly dismissed his symptoms as “acid reflux” and was overheard shouting, “Jabo de, jabo de” (“Let him go, let him go”). This chilling detail, now part of the investigation, has become a key piece of evidence in the case.

Meanwhile, the Assam CID arrested Shyamkanu Mahanta Siddharth Sarma from different states on October 1. Both were produced in court and were sent to 14 days of custody.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Income Tax (I-T) Department are likely to join the Assam Police in investigating alleged organised financial crimes and acquisition of benami properties by Mahanta.

Zubeen Garg Death Case

The CID is currently probing Garg’s death after more than 60 FIRs were lodged across the state against Mahanta, the main organiser of the Northeast India Festival in Singapore where the singer had gone to perform, and almost 10 others, including the Assamese cultural icon’s manager Sarma. Garima Garg, wife of the late singer Zubeen Garg, said she remains confident in the legal process and is hopeful justice will be delivered.

The SIT was constituted to investigate the singer’s death during the Northeast India Festival in Singapore on September 19. Authorities said Zubeen Garg died by drowning.

Zubeen Garg passed away in Singapore on September 19 after an alleged drowning incident. His body was flown to the national capital, Delhi, and later transported to Assam on a commercial flight that landed in Guwahati on Sunday morning. Garg was in Singapore for the Northeast India Festival.

His final rites were carried out in the Kamarkuchi village of Assam on September 23, in the presence of hundreds of fans, his family members, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and other political leaders. A gun salute was given to Zubeen at the crematorium.
