Nagpur Couple Killed In Italy Road Accident During Family Holiday
A family holiday in Europe ended in tragedy for a Nagpur couple on Thursday, when businessman Javed Akhtar and his wife, Nadira Gulshan, were killed in a road accident in Italy. The couple, who were travelling with their three children, were involved in a car crash on the Aurelia Highway near Grosseto. The Indian Embassy in Italy confirmed the incident and said it is closely coordinating with the family and local authorities to provide assistance.

Javed Akhtar, 55, was a well-known hotelier and entrepreneur from Nagpur, Maharashtra. His wife, Nadira Gulshan, 47, was travelling with their three children – daughters Arzoo Akhtar, 21, and Shifa Akhtar, and son Jazel Akhtar. The family owns the Gulshan Plaza hotel near Sitabuldi flyover in Nagpur.
The family had started their holiday from France on 22 September and had travelled to Italy for sightseeing. The accident occurred on the Aurelia Highway near Grosseto while they were in a nine-seater minibus heading to a tourist stop.
What do we know about the accident?
As per reports, the accident involved a van carrying tourists of Asian origin and a truck that rammed the broken-down van, causing a collision with the minibus. Javed Akhtar and Nadira Gulshan, along with the minibus driver, died on the spot.
Their daughter, Arzoo, sustained severe head injuries and is currently in critical condition at Lee Scott Hospital in Siena. Shifa and Jazel are recovering in hospitals in Florence and Grosseto, respectively.
According to local reports, rescue teams arrived late at the crash site. Jazel, who regained consciousness, dialled the local helpline number to request assistance. Fire department teams eventually retrieved the injured, and helicopters were used to airlift them to hospitals due to the severity of their injuries.

In a statement posted on X, the embassy said, “The Embassy conveys its heartfelt and sincere condolences for the tragic loss of two Indian nationals from Nagpur in an accident near Grosseto. Our prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured family members who are undergoing treatment. The Embassy is in contact with the family and local Italian authorities. We are providing all assistance to the family.”
