Swami Chaitanyananda Case: Swami Chaitanyananda Saraswati, a self-styled ‘godman’ arrested over sexual harassment charges, has been sent to a 14-day judicial custody by Delhi’s Patiala House Court. He was taken into custody from Uttar Pradesh’s Agra last week.

Swami Chaitanyananda, who is accused of molesting 17 female students at a private institute in Delhi’s Vasant Kunj, was produced before the Court on completion of his five-day police custody.

Today, the police did not seek further custodial interrogation and made an application for judicial custody, citing the gravity of the offences and the need to prevent tampering with evidence and influencing witnesses. However, Chaitanyananda’s counsel questioned the grounds for seeking judicial custody.

During the proceedings, the court asked whether Section 232 of the IPC had been added to the charges, noting its absence in previous filings. However, the investigating officer clarified that a second complaint from the same complainant had been received, based on which Section 232 has now been invoked.

What’s The Case?

Chaitanyananda has been accused of misusing his position to sexually harass women, particularly targeting women from economically weaker backgrounds. A complaint was filed on August 4 at the Vasant Kunj North Police Station.

The complainant described systematic exploitation by Chaitanyananda, alleging that students’ laptops, phones, and educational documents were confiscated and withheld to exert control. She further accused him of manipulating students with false promises of foreign placements while subjecting them to unwanted advances.

Soon after, the institute also received complaints from the Air Force headquarters, because many of the students at the institute came from families of Air Force personnel. Acting on the letters, the Governing Council of the Peetham held a virtual meeting with over 30 women students at the institute on August 3.

During the investigation, the self-styled godman was also found to be involved in multiple fraudulent activities, including forging visiting cards and passports. During the investigation, police found two fake visiting cards from the Baba – one identifying himself as a Permanent Ambassador of the United Nations and another as an Indian Special Envoy of the BRICS.

Swami Chaitanyananda was arrested from Hotel First in Taj Ganj around 3:30 am in Agra and brought to Delhi’s Vasant Kunj Police Station. He faces charges of sexual abuse and financial misappropriation. Police said he withdrew around Rs 60 lakh after fleeing and is accused of misappropriating more than Rs 30 crore.

Chaitanyananda Confronted With Female Aides

Earlier, he was confronted with his two women aides, who allegedly threatened victims and forced them to delete his lewd messages, a police officer said.

Police have found chats with many women on the phone of 62-year-old Saraswati, who tried to lure them with false promises.

His phones also had multiple photographs of him with air hostesses and screenshots of display pictures (DP) of women, the officer said.
