Sporting a casual biker look far removed from the stiff fashion often associated with Indian politicians, Congress leader and Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi made headlines during his visit to Colombia. Taking to X, he praised Indian two-wheeler giants Bajaj, Hero and TVS, while delivering a veiled critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

“Proud to see Bajaj, Hero & TVS do so well in Colombia. Shows Indian companies can win with innovation, not cronyism. Great job,” read Rahul Gandhi’s post on X.

Speech at EIA University

On October 1, Rahul Gandhi addressed students at Colombia’s EIA University, where he accused the Modi government of mounting a “wholesale attack on democracy” in India. Stressing the country’s cultural and religious diversity, he argued that democracy was the only system capable of accommodating such plurality.

Gandhi contrasted India’s model with China’s, saying the country could not adopt authoritarian methods to suppress its people. While optimistic about India’s capabilities in technology, engineering, and healthcare, he warned of deep-seated structural flaws that, in his view, required urgent correction.

BJP hits back

His comments drew sharp responses from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Party MP Sudhanshu Trivedi accused Gandhi of denigrating India abroad, saying, “Even after being ruled by the same family for 100 years, panicking by the downfall of their organisation and loss of power, the head of that family, who today seems to be becoming the henchman of anti-India forces, has, as per his habit, made another statement from foreign soil, which is not surprising.”

Indian motorcycles in Colombia

Meanwhile, Gandhi’s praise for Bajaj, Hero and TVS came against the backdrop of their growing success in Latin America. Colombia has emerged as a key market for Indian manufacturers, with motorcycles and scooters from these firms gaining ground due to their affordability, performance, and adaptability to local needs.

This reflects the wider global expansion of Indian two-wheeler brands, which have been investing in research and innovation to strengthen their presence overseas. Industry experts note that the sector’s growth underlines India’s potential as a global hub for affordable yet technologically advanced mobility solutions.
