North India is expected to face unusual and severe weather from Saturday to Wednesday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted very heavy rainfall in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. The upcoming rain activity is being attributed to three strong weather systems coming together and bringing large amounts of moisture to the region.

The unusual weather event will start on Saturday with a new western disturbance moving into northwest India. This system will pull in moist air from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. At the same time, a low-pressure area over the northeast Arabian Sea and another depression near the Bay of Bengal will also strengthen, sending even more moisture into the region and making the rain heavier, according to a report in The Indian Express.

Authorities have issued red alerts, warning of extremely heavy rain (over 21 cm in a single day). The weather may also bring thunderstorms, lightning, and hail in some areas.

Weather experts are calling this event “very unique”. The different weather systems are expected to push the cyclonic circulation from the western disturbance into Punjab and Rajasthan by October 5, which will increase the rainfall and could lead to flash floods and landslides in hilly areas.

Widespread rain and thunderstorms are likely from Sunday to Wednesday, with the heaviest rain expected on Monday, especially in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and nearby regions.

Punjab has already received 41% more rain than usual this monsoon, and the upcoming weather could increase the risk of flooding even more. In Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, there is a high chance of landslides, especially in the hills. Rescue teams are on standby, and officials are asking people to store essential supplies, avoid unnecessary travel, and keep an eye on weather alerts, especially in areas at higher risk.

As these weather systems combine and delay the end of the monsoon, local authorities are urging people to stay alert and be prepared for sudden and possibly dangerous weather in the coming days.
