A 20-year-old woman, whose “death” had led to her husband and in-laws being booked in a dowry death case, has been found alive in Madhya Pradesh after two years, police said. The woman had gone missing from her marital home in Auraiya district in 2023, about 18 months after her marriage. When she could not be traced, her family lodged a missing person’s complaint on October 23, 2023.

With no breakthrough in the search, her relatives alleged she had been killed for dowry. Acting on a court’s directions, police registered a case against her husband and six in-laws under Section 304B (dowry death) of the Indian Penal Code. For the past two years, her husband’s family faced trial in the case. Meanwhile, the matter was pursued by the Special Operations Group and surveillance teams of the Uttar Pradesh police, who eventually traced the missing woman to Madhya Pradesh.

Auraiya Circle Officer Ashok Kumar Singh said, “The woman went missing a year and a half after she got married. A missing person’s complaint was filed by her family and then, on the court’s direction, a case was registered against the husband and some of her in-laws. The investigation was on and we managed to trace her to Madhya Pradesh. She was brought back to Auraiya on October 1 and further probe is on.”

Officials said investigators are now trying to determine what the woman was doing in Madhya Pradesh and why she did not attempt to contact her family or in-laws during the two-year period.

The survival of the woman could change the course of the ongoing dowry death trial, police said.
