A video from Punjab’s Gurdaspur district has gone viral, showing a woman verbally and physically assaulting her elderly mother-in-law as her son pleads with her to stop.

“Mumma na karo (Don’t do it, mother),” the boy is heard saying in Punjabi as he records the incident on his phone. In the footage, the woman – identified as Harjeet Kaur – is seen dragging her mother-in-law, Gurbajan Kaur, by the hair, slapping and beating her. She also verbally abuse the elderly woman during the assault.

The incident reportedly took place on Sunday. According to the family, it was triggered after Harjeet Kaur caught her mother-in-law filming one of her outbursts.

In her police complaint, Gurbajan Kaur, a widow, accused her daughter-in-law of repeatedly abusing her and pressuring her to transfer property in her name. She also alleged that the assaults had been ongoing for some time, NDTV reported.

Her grandson, Charatveer Singh, who recorded the video, claimed this was not an isolated incident. He told police that his mother often beat his grandmother after consuming alcohol, and that both he and his father had been victims of her violence as well.

Gurbajan Kaur told police that her grandson had captured several past incidents on camera. In one clip, Harjeet Kaur is seen hitting her husband with a slipper. In another, Charatveer appears to be locked in a room, allegedly to prevent him from helping his grandmother.

The police have issued a warning to Harjeet Kaur, and further investigation is underway.

Meanwhile, Raj Gill, Chairperson of the Punjab State Commission for Women, said a suo motu notice has been issued.

“Old helpless mother was beaten up by the daughter in law in Gurdaspur . Sou Moto was issued immediately and strict action will be taken. Elder’s safety , their rights and protection is commission’s priority,” Gill posted on X, sharing the video and official order.
