Gandhi Jayanti Celebrations 2025: Celebrated on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti commemorates the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, also known as the father of India. This year marks Mahatma Gandhi’s 156th birth anniversary. In 2025, Gandhi Jayanti will be observed on Thursday. October 2 is observed as a national holiday in India, as it honours Gandhi’s legacy of truth and ahimsa (non-violence) and his immense contribution to the country’s independence movement.

Gandhi Jayanti: History

Mahatma Gandhi, also fondly known as Bapu, was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat. Gandhi had later moved to South Africa in order to start his career in law, and he stayed there for around 22 years. After returning to India, Gandhi decided to traverse the country.

His first major movement was the Champaran Satyagraha, which started in Bihar back in 1917. During India’s freedom struggle, Gandhi was instrumental in major movements for the country’s independence, including the Quit India, Civil Disobedience and Non-Cooperation movements.

Gandhi Jayanti: Significance

From promoting non-violence to honouring Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy and fostering social change, the significance of Gandhi Jayanti is simply and truly immense.

Gandhi’s principles of truth, simplicity and self-reliance continue to inspire social movements and community service initiatives. Not only in India, but also globally, this day underlines the importance and continued relevance of Gandhi’s philosophy and ideology. Gandhi Jayanti 2025: Celebrations

Many celebrate this day with prayer services, memorial ceremonies and various cultural activities in schools, colleges and government institutions. Mahatma Gandhi’s sculptures are also adorned with garlands and flowers on this day. Community service like cleanliness drives and tree plantation activities are also organized on Gandhi Jayanti.
