TVK chief Vijay announced on Wednesday that he will cover school and college expenses for families affected by the tragic stampede at his rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, while also offering job opportunities within his group and providing life insurance to those impacted.

Earlier, Vijay had announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the families of each of the 41 people who died and Rs 2 lakh for the nearly 100 people injured in the incident.

“I am ready to cover the necessary school and college expenses for families affected by the Karur tragedy, provide employment opportunities within our group and offer life insurance as well,” wrote Vijay’s team in an X post.

Earlier, the 51-year-old TVK chief expressed deep grief, saying, “I am at a loss for words to express the pain my heart endures… No matter who offers words of comfort, the loss of our loved ones is unbearable.”

Vijay added that his party would stand by the families of the victims and the injured, assuring full support for those undergoing treatment.

“While this amount is not significant in the face of such loss, it is my duty to stand by you,” he said.

The stampede occurred on Saturday when a massive crowd of nearly 27,000 people surged uncontrollably at the rally, which was originally planned for around 10,000 attendees.

Vijay’s late arrival—nearly seven hours behind schedule—combined with inadequate arrangements for food, water, and security, contributed to the chaos.

Tamil Nadu DGP G Venkataraman confirmed that only 500 police personnel were deployed at the venue despite the huge turnout.

The DMK-led state government had already announced Rs 10 lakh compensation for each deceased and Rs 1 lakh for the injured, while the Prime Minister’s Office announced Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of each victim and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

Chief Minister MK Stalin has since rushed to Karur, ordered urgent medical relief, and set up a judicial commission to probe the tragedy, headed by retired Justice Aruna Jagadeesan.
