Man United legend emerges as Ruben Amorim’s back-up option if Portuguese coach is sacked

As Manchester United continue to struggle for form and victories under Ruben Amorim, a former legendary midfielder has emerged as a back-up option in English media.

Reports in England suggest that a Manchester United great could become the next manager of the club if the board decides to sack under-fire Ruben Amorim. The 40-year-old Portuguese tactician Amorim is quickly losing the support of former Man United players and fans as the club continues to struggle for results.

The latest setback came last Saturday as United lost 3-1 at Brentford. They had defeated Chelsea a week back and just when fans felt the club was closer to scripting a turnaround, another defeat crushed their morale. Amorim, as a Manchester United manager, has only collected 34 points in 33 English Premier League games.

Carrick could replace Amorim at Man United

Now, The Sun claims that legendary United Midfielder Michael Carrick is in the fray for a caretaker position at the Red Devils in case Amorim gets sacked midway through the league. Carrick played the same role for two matches in late 2021 when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired by Manchester United.

The 44-year-old Carrick played 12 years as a midfielder for Manchester United and has also coached Middlesbrough in the past. The Sun adds that Carrick is close to United management as his 16-year-old son, Jacy, is part of their academy.

Carrick was also touted as a future Man United manager by former player Solskjaer in an interview with The Athletic in 2023. “I am 100 per cent sure that Michael will be the manager of Manchester United if he wants to be,” he said. “I cannot see him not being the Manchester United manager.”

“He’s a winner, a massive winner, yet he stays in control of his emotions. He knows what he wants and doesn’t lose his rag. He’ll never be emotional and fight with the players.”

It has also been reported in English media that Amorim is currently safe in his position as the Man United management has not lost its confidence in the former Sporting CP boss, but things can change if the football giant continues to lose matches.
