Argentina: Suspected mastermind behind triple femicide arrested in Peru

After the bodies were found, the victims’ relatives took part in a large march to Parliament in Buenos Aires on Saturday to call for justice

Argentina’s government confirmed on Tuesday that Peruvian authorities arrested the alleged mastermind of a brutal triple murder that was live-streamed. This detention brings the total number of arrests in the case to nine.

“I want to congratulate the Peruvian National Police for their tremendous work and collaboration in capturing the two fugitives in the triple murder,” Argentine Security Minister Patricia Bullrich said in a statement posted to X.

“Little J,” the suspect in question, was arrested in Pucusana, located approximately 72 kilometres south of Lima. Previously, Bullrich had announced the arrest of a different suspect in Peru named Matias Ozorio.

Argentinians in shock

Investigators determined that the victims were tricked into getting into a van on September 19 under the pretext of going to a party. According to authorities, this was part of a plan to “punish” the young women and girl for breaking a gang code, intended as a warning to others.

The motive was confirmed by a video of the incident, which was revealed by one of the detainees during questioning, according to Javier Alonso, security minister for the Buenos Aires province.

In the video, a gang leader could be heard saying, “This is what happens to those who steal drugs from me.”

The bodies of the three victims were found buried at a property in a southern suburb of Buenos Aires on Wednesday, five days after their disappearance.

Call for justice

Following the discovery of the bodies, relatives of the victims joined a massive march to Parliament in Buenos Aires on Saturday to demand justice.

During the protest, Leonel del Castillo, father of one of the victims, Brenda, stressed on the need for greater protection, telling reporters, “Women must be protected more than ever.” He had previously described the horrific extent of the abuse, stating that he was unable to identify his daughter’s body because of the physical torture inflicted on her.

A local femicide monitoring group cited by AFP reported that a woman is killed by a man every 36 hours in Argentina.
