Daily commuters may soon get relief as paperwork has begun on a 20-km direct, high-speed, signal-free elevated corridor from South Delhi to the Gurugram-Faridabad Road via Mahipalpur.

Weeks after announcing the plan, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has floated tenders to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the elevated corridor linking AIIMS with the Mahipalpur Bypass and extending it further to the Gurugram-Faridabad Road. A similar tender was issued in May-June but it did not go ahead and now the ministry has issued a revised tender with updated terms.

Before the DPR stage, the project has to pass the feasibility study. The decision on DPR will be based on the outcome of the feasibility study, official documents seen by News18 read.

While the entire work has to be completed in the next nine months, the terms empower the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to terminate the contract at the inception or feasibility stage if it is found unviable.

The project was proposed earlier this year after Rekha Gupta became the chief minister of Delhi. Union minister Nitin Gadkari had assured that NHAI will execute this project.

The DPR will involve highway alignment, pavement design, structures, intersections and service roads, traffic management and safety audits apart from environment and social impact and expected cost. The feasibility study will cover traffic study, including axle load surveys, alignment options, preliminary topographical study and lane configuration. The deadline for bid submission is October 15.

These stages are different from actual ground work for the project and it is after all the necessary approvals that civil work can be started, an official told News18.

This 20-km elevated road is a part of a bigger plan to decongest the national capital for improving connectivity, cutting travel time, and reducing traffic in Delhi and its surrounding areas. These new roads are not just offering seamless mobility but also enhanced ease of living.

Last month, two major roads in Delhi were inaugurated—the Dwarka Expressway and Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II). These major access-controlled roads added about 80 km of national highway across the national capital region for smoother flow of traffic.

Travelling between AIIMS and Gurugram currently takes from 50 minutes to 1.5 hours depending upon the traffic flow. The distance via Mahipalpur is about 32 km. With the new road, the distance and travel time will reduce significantly.
