The change of season has brought more than just cooler mornings to Delhi and its neighbouring cities. Clinics across the region are reporting a surge in flu-like illnesses, but doctors say this is not the ‘usual seasonal sniffles.’ A noticeable rise in cases of H3N2 influenza, a strain of Influenza A virus, is causing concern due to its more intense symptoms and potential complications. From high fevers to prolonged fatigue, this year’s outbreak appears harsher than in previous flu seasons, prompting health experts to issue timely warnings.

What Is H3N2?

Recommended Stories

H3N2 is a subtype of Influenza A that has been circulating globally for decades. Unlike the common cold, this flu strain is marked by a sudden spike in fever, severe body aches, and overwhelming tiredness. Because the virus mutates frequently, immunity from past infections or older vaccines offers limited protection, making annual flu shots critical.

While anyone can fall ill, H3N2 poses greater risks for children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic health conditions. “Infants under 1 year are at higher risk as their immune systems are still developing. Newborns under 6 months who haven’t been breastfed may also fall sicker, as they miss out on protective maternal antibodies. Children under 5 in general are more prone to catching infections because of frequent exposure in schools and playgroups. Kids with underlying conditions like asthma or heart disease can develop more severe illness, and those who haven’t received the annual flu vaccine are also at greater risk. Parents should be alert and seek medical attention promptly if such children develop flu-like symptoms,” explains Dr Shivangi Bora, Paediatrician, Allergy & Asthma Consultant, and Paediatric Sleep Consultant, BabyMD – The Children’s Clinic, Bangalore.

In some cases, it can lead to complications such as pneumonia, hospitalisation, and worsening of pre-existing illnesses.

Key Symptoms Of H3N2 To Watch Out For

Doctors in Delhi report patients showing higher-than-usual fever, persistent cough, sore throats, and muscle weakness. Many also describe extreme fatigue that lingers even after other symptoms ease. Common red flags include:

  • High fever and chills
  • Persistent cough and sore throat
  • Headaches and muscle pain
  • Nausea or vomiting (occasionally)

Anyone experiencing these symptoms for more than two to three days should consult a doctor promptly.

How The H3N2 Virus Spreads?

H3N2 is highly contagious. It spreads through droplets released when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or even talks. Shared surfaces such as door handles, phones, and handrails also serve as transmission points. Crowded spaces like metros, schools, and office corridors make it easy for the virus to travel quickly.

Staying Safe This Flu Season

Health experts recommend a mix of preventive steps to curb infection:

  • Get vaccinated annually to keep up with evolving strains.
  • Practice hand hygiene with frequent washing or sanitiser use.
  • Wear masks in crowded spaces to reduce exposure.
  • Stay home if sick to avoid spreading the virus.
  • Boost immunity with a nutritious diet, hydration, and adequate rest.

When To Seek Urgent Care?

Persistent high fever, breathing difficulties, severe chest pain, or rapidly worsening symptoms warrant immediate medical attention. Early treatment is key to preventing serious outcomes.
