Tabu's 'Chandni Bar' gets a sequel: Release date and others details about the Ajay Bahl directorial

Two and a half decades after Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Chandni Bar’ stunned audiences with its raw honesty, the cult classic is set to return with a sequel.Producer Sandeep Singh has officially acquired the rights under his banner and announced Chandni Bar 2, to be helmed by filmmaker Ajay Bahl. The sequel is scheduled to hit theatres on December 3, 2026. This will coincide with the 25th anniversary of the original. Here let’s take a look at a few things to know about the sequel to this cult classic Tabu starrer.

A classic that changed cinema

Released in 2001, ‘Chandni Bar’ was a hard-hitting portrayal of Mumbai’s underbelly, exposing the realities of bar dancers, crime, and survival in a city of contradictions. Headlined by Tabu and Atul Kulkarni, the film not only won multiple National Awards, but also earned much love from the audiences for her raw performance as Mumtaz who is a naive young rural woman . Tabu’s stunning performance remains unforgettable.

Revisiting struggles with a modern lens

Announcing the sequel, producer Sandeep Singh said that ‘Chandni Bar’ was never just a film and it was a mirror to society which is unflinching and honest. “Two decades later, the struggles of survival, dignity, and ambition are still real. With this sequel, I want to confront those truths again, telling a story that resonates with today’s generation,” said the producer during the sequel announcement via social media. Director Ajay Bahl, known for his unconventional storytelling in ‘Section 375’ and ‘BA Pass’, said during the announcement that the original film was landmark filmmaking, they want the sequel to carry forward that same intensity.

A new-age Chandni Bar

Chandni Bar 2 is expected to explore an evolved setting while retaining its grit. The film will be shot in Mumbai and Dubai. Shooting is set to begin in mid-2026, with casting for the leading roles starting soon.
