In a tragic incident, at least 39 people were killed and over 59 were injured in Tamil Nadu’s Karur during a mega political rally led by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay. An overwhelming crowd led to a stampede, with many attendees collapsing and needing urgent medical care.
A video from the scene shows people tightly packed together when sudden pushing caused several to lose balance and fall. This clip captures the moment the Karur stampede began, a sudden surge in the tightly packed crowd leads to people stumbling and falling, triggering panic and chaos. Bystanders can be seen trying to pull others to safety as police and volunteers rush in to control the situation.

Several videos show people screaming for help, scrambling over one another in a desperate bid to breathe. Children could be seen perched on the shoulders of adults, likely their parents, watching Vijay’s bus approach from a distance, just minutes before the tragedy struck.
As the crowd swelled and people started getting suffocated because of the heat and overcrowding, Vijay paused his speech in Karur, distributed water to people, and arranged for an ambulance for those in the crowd feeling suffocated.
After the incident, Vijay went to the airport in Trichy and took a flight to Chennai. He refused to comment to the media at the airport. He spoke on the incident for the first time only after he landed in the state capital.
Reacting to the stampede that broke out during his rally, TVK Vijay said the incident has left him shattered. “My heart is shattered; I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express.”
“I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for the swift recovery of those receiving treatment in the hospital,” he wrote on X.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has sought a report from the Tamil Nadu government on the incident. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin visited Karur. He met with the families of the victims and ordered an investigation into the stampede by a one-member panel headed by retired high court judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan.
