The Tamil Nadu government on Saturday announced dedicated helpline numbers for families and relatives seeking assistance after the tragic stampede at actor-turned-politician Vijay’s campaign rally in Karur.

Authorities said people can reach out through the following numbers for assistance: 04324 256306 (Calling) and 7010806322 (WhatsApp).

The tragedy struck during Vijay’s address when a stampede broke out amid severe overcrowding, leaving dozens dead and many injured.

So far, at least 38 people have died and over 60 are hospitalised in severe conditions.

Officials said permission had been granted for a crowd of 10,000, but nearly 50,000 people turned up at the 1.2 lakh square feet venue.

The sudden surge of people forced Vijay to pause his speech as several attendees, including party workers and children, fainted.

Emergency teams rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, with DMK leader Senthil Balaji and the district collector personally reviewing the situation.

Chief Minister MK Stalin called the incident “worrying” and said he had directed senior ministers, including Health Minister Subramanian and Education Minister Anbil Mahesh, to coordinate relief efforts.

Stalin urged the public to cooperate with medical teams and announced he would visit Karur on Sunday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed condolences, describing the incident as “deeply saddening.”

“My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time. Praying for a swift recovery to all those injured,” he said in a post on X.

The incident occurred while Vijay was delivering a speech that indirectly criticised former DMK minister Senthil Balaji, accusing the party of backtracking on its promise to establish an airport in Karur.

Authorities have assured that relief efforts are being carried out on a war footing, while the helpline numbers will remain active to assist families of those affected.
