Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand is expected to meet her Indian counterpart, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, in the coming weeks, a report with Bloomberg has claimed.

During an interview, Anita Anand said domestic public safety is the top priority for her country’s government. She added that Canada’s national security adviser just met with her Indian counterpart, and the two discussed transnational repression.

“We will continue to stay on top of it for the benefit of the safety and security of the Canadian public,” Anand was quoted as saying.

The report also suggested that Anita will be meeting her Chinese counterpart, too, as she said that Canada must “ensure we have a bilateral relationship with significant economic powers in the Indo-Pacific.”

WHY ANITA ANAND’s MEETING WITH JAISHANKAR IS RELEVANT

Anita Anand last spoke with EAM Jaishankar in May this year, when they both spoke about the prospects of strengthening India-Canada ties.

During the phone call, Anita Anand, who was then recently appointed as the Foreign Minister of Canada under the Mark Carney administration, expressed her gratitude towards Jaishankar for the discussion on strengthening India-Canada relations. She further added that she was looking forward to continuing to work together.

The India-Canada ties had been strained after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of being linked to the killing of terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil.

The allegation was strongly denied as malicious by the Indian government.

As the tensions between both countries soared, India’s previous high commissioner left Canada after Ottawa said he was among six diplomats who were expelled after they were linked to Nijjar’s murder.

India also said that same day that it had ordered the expulsion of six high-ranking Canadian diplomats, including the then-acting high commissioner.

Later, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Trudeau’s successor, Mark Carney, agreed to reinstate senior diplomats when they held their first bilateral meeting in Canada in June.

In August this year, India and Canada announced new high commissioners to each other’s countries.
