UK TikToker charged with murder in Dubai, may face death penalty; claims she acted in self-defence

Brooke George

A British TikTok influencer has been charged with premeditated murder in Dubai after the fatal stabbing of a British man she had travelled to the UAE to meet. The 23-year-old woman, Brooke George from Gravesend, Kent, denies intentionally killing her partner and says she acted in self-defence during an alleged violent assault, BBC reported.George was arrested in the early hours of June 22 and remains in custody in Dubai. Under UAE law, a conviction for premeditated murder can carry the death penalty.According to advocacy organisation Detained in Dubai, cited by BBC, George and the 26-year-old man had met online before beginning a relationship. The group claims the relationship became abusive during her second visit to Dubai.Radha Stirling, chief executive of Detained in Dubai, said George alleged that her partner became controlling, withheld her passport and physically assaulted her. The organisation said George told investigators she feared for her life and used a kitchen knife to defend herself during the incident.Detained in Dubai has urged the UAE authorities to release George on bail and investigate the case in the context of alleged domestic violence. The organisation also said she should receive legal representation, medical care and full British consular assistance while the investigation continues. George has also alleged that she was forced to remove her clothes in front of male police officers while in custody, without a female officer present. Detained in Dubai described the allegation as deeply distressing and said it raises concerns about her treatment. Her mother, Thereza George, said she noticed a marked change in her daughter’s behaviour during the second trip to Dubai. She said Brooke appeared unusually quiet and frightened in the hours before the incident, and later contacted her in a state of panic with visible facial injuries.”She was absolutely terrified,” her mother said, adding that she believes her daughter had been trying to return to the UK before the incident occurred.Stirling said family members and friends became increasingly worried that George may have been lured to Dubai under false pretences, citing what they described as changes in her partner’s behaviour and George’s repeated expressions of fear. The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it is assisting a British woman detained in the UAE.”We are in touch with a British woman detained in the UAE, we are supporting her family, and we are in contact with the local authorities,” an FCDO spokesperson said. The case remains under investigation by authorities in Dubai. George has been charged, but no verdict has been reached, and the allegations made by her and by Detained in Dubai have not been tested in court.
