The airspace over Denmark’s Aalborg Airport was closed after drones were spotted flying nearby, airport authorities said on Wednesday.

CNN quoted FlightRadar24 as saying that at least three inbound flights have been redirected, while two outbound flights and one inbound have been canceled.

Following this incident, police launched an investigation into the matter and have not yet determined the person controlling the drones or what their purpose is.

This was the second time this week that an airport in Denmark was closed due to drones.

On Monday, two or three large drones were seen near Copenhagen airport. This halted all take-offs and landings for nearly four hours.

CNN quoted Denmark’s National Police Commissioner Thorkild Fogde saying on Tuesday that they were not amateur or hobby drones, but rather large drones that likely had a capable operator, though police had not yet identified who was behind it.

Meanwhile, the airport over Oslo airport was closed for around three hours Tuesday morning due to a separate drone sighting.

However, Fogde confirmed that there was no indication the Copenhagen incident was linked to the drone sighting in Oslo.

This comes amid high alert in Europe since Russian drones violated both Polish and Romanian airspace earlier this month. Following this, NATO fighter jets shot down Russian drones that illegally entered the Polish airspace during an attack on Ukraine. Days later, NATO intercepted three Russian jets that violated Estonian airspace. Romania has also claimed that a Russian drone violated its airspace during an attack on Ukraine.

On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump said he believes NATO members should shoot down Russian aircraft if they violate allied airspace.

On Monday, US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz condemned Russia’s repeated incursions of NATO territory and emphasised that the United States and its allies “will defend every inch of NATO territory”.
