Ladakh Unrest: Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta on Wednesday alleged a “conspiracy” behind violence during protests demanding statehood in Ladakh. The protests, which saw the BJP office and vehicles set ablaze, claimed at least four lives and left 45 others injured, including 22 police personnel.

While condemning the violence, the LG claimed that people were being incited by drawing parallels with the recent youth-led movements in Bangladesh and Nepal that toppled governments there.

“In a democratic system, protesting is a right. However, it must be done in a peaceful manner. For the past two days, attempts have been made to incite people, and the protest held here was compared to those held in Bangladesh and Nepal. This smells of a conspiracy behind the protest,” LG Gupta said as quoted by news agency ANI.

He further highlighted the potential consequences had the authorities not intervened.

“When police were deployed to control the law and order situation, a CRPF vehicle was torched. During the protest, DG’s vehicle was attacked with stones. If this protest had not been stopped, then these people (protestors) would have ruined the entire city of Leh,” he added.

Gupta also said a probe would be launched into the role of those involved in the demonstrations.

“A probe will be conducted to determine the involvement of individuals from outside Ladakh in the protest. Who is responsible for the people who have died today? It is those people who incited the protest. Such things cannot be tolerated…I want to ensure peace is maintained in Ladakh,” he said.

Ladakh Unrest

Four people were killed and at least 45 were injured, including 22 police personnel, as the protests demanding statehood for Ladakh turned violent on Wednesday.

Amid large-scale violence, arson, and street clashes, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk called off his fortnight-long hunger strike to press for statehood and the extension of the Sixth Schedule to Ladakh.

The BJP office was vandalised and set on fire as were several vehicles. Flames and clouds of smoke could be seen from afar with police resorting to firing and teargas shelling to bring the situation under control.
