Senior BJP leader V Muraleedharan launched a scathing attack against the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the police over the death of K Anil Kumar, councillor of Thirumala ward.

Anil Kumar died by suicide, allegedly due to financial issues at a cooperative society of which he was the president. In his suicide note, he said, “I have helped our people, but they delayed in repaying the amount”.

Muraleedharan dismissed allegations linking the BJP to the death of Kumar, stressing that the suicide note did not refer to the party. Addressing media questions, he said the term “our people” in the letter referred to members of the cooperative society Anil Kumar headed, and not to any political group.

Muraleedharan accused the CPI(M) of using the AKG Centre to spin the incident into a political attack on the BJP.

“When he says our people, it means who? Those who borrow money are members of that society. The money is lent to them with the expectation that they will repay it. Naturally, such people will be important to the president. I’m not saying all of them are our people. In a cooperative society, money is lent according to established regulations and mutual trust. So, what is the problem with his addressing them as ‘our people’? Why are you using the AKG Centre’s capsule (CPIM headquarters) as a political allegation? There is no mention of the BJP in the suicide letter,” he said.

This comes after the CPI(M), demanded a police investigation into the suspected suicide of Kumar, seeking to hold the party’s state leadership politically accountable.

CPIM seeks a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the suicide. They also said that the BJP should answer as to what Anil meant in the letter by our people. “Isn’t it the BJP?”

Meanwhile, the BJP claimed that it was the CPI (M) and the police who led to this suicide. CPIM district secretary V Joy said that Anil hasn’t mentioned a word about CPI (M) or the police. “How can the BJP claim it?” Joy also said that there is no police case registered against Anil or the cooperative society. He further alleged that the BJP led him to take his life.

Earlier in the day, BJP workers carried out a march to Thampanpoor police station, accusing the officers there of threatening Anil Kumar in connection with financial issues at the cooperative society.

However, senior CPI (M) leader and general education minister V Sivankutty questioned the BJP’s claim, saying the saffron party was using the suicide for “political gain”, PTI reported.

“What we understand is that the farm tour cooperative society was controlled by a BJP-led administrative panel. If so, how can the party evade the responsibility for the suicide of the Thirumala councillor?” he asked.
