Assam bid farewell to legendary singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg as lakhs of fans thronged the streets on September 21. The sheer scale of the gathering turned Guhawati into a sea of mourning, with people from across Assam and beyond arriving for one last glimpse of the beloved star.

The moment’s impact was so profound that the Limca Book of Records officially acknowledged it as one of the largest public funerals ever held. Zubeen Garg’s final journey was ranked the fourth-largest public gathering globally, alongside iconic farewells such as those of Michael Jackson, Pope Francis, and Queen Elizabeth II, Money Control reported.

In Guwahati, traffic ground to a halt as thousands of grieving fans flooded the streets, bringing daily life to a standstill. The funeral procession evoked heartfelt tributes, flowers, silent prayers, and soulful songs that filled the atmosphere. Every part of the city echoed a deep sense of loss, not only for Assam but for an entire generation raised on Zubeen’s music.

Nicknamed the “King of Humming,” Garg was more than a playback singer. He was a cultural bridge who gave Assamese music a national identity, while also leaving a mark in Bollywood with evergreen tracks like Ya Ali from Gangster (2006). His ability to sing across multiple languages and genres made him a household name and a symbol of regional pride.

Zubeen’s sudden death on September 19 in Singapore, following a scuba diving mishap, sent shockwaves across the nation. He had travelled there to perform at the North East Festival, but tragedy struck when he lost consciousness underwater. Despite prompt rescue efforts and medical care, doctors could not revive him. He was just 52.

The enormity of the funeral reflected how deeply he was loved. Generations of fans. young and old, lined up for hours just to pay their respects. Social media was flooded with images of the massive crowds, with many calling it a moment of unity in grief that Assam had never seen before.
