A man trapped under debris for more than 16 hours was successfully pulled out alive by rescuers in Nandanagar in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Thursday. The rescue and relief efforts are ongoing following heavy rains and a cloudburst that struck the region late Wednesday night.

According to Chamoli Police, rescue operations entered their second day on Friday, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local police actively searching for survivors in the villages of Kuntari and Dhurma.

In a post on X on Thursday, Chamoli Police confirmed the development. In another tweet earlier today, police said that the body of a woman was recovered from the site.

In a key development, the Public Works Department constructed a temporary Bailey bridge on the Dehradun-Mussoorie Highway to replace a damaged bridge near the Shiva Temple. While only small vehicles are currently permitted on the highway, this move ensures some connectivity for residents and travelers, news agency ANI reported.

Further, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the affected areas in the Raipur and Mussoorie assembly constituencies to assess the situation. He said that the disaster had impacted over 200 people, damaging around 35 houses and injuring 20 individuals. At least 14 people remain missing.

“Around 35 houses have been damaged due to a cloudburst. Around 20 people are injured, and 14 others are missing. 200 people have been affected by the disaster last night in Chamoli. All rescue teams have reached there. DM and SSP are also on the spot. The injured have been taken to the hospitals. The severely injured will be shifted to AIIMS Rishikesh. NDRF, SDRF, ITBP, and Police are carrying out rescue operations. We are trying to move the people to safe places,” ANI quoted the Chief Minister as saying.

CM Dhami added that damaged roads are being repaired on a priority basis and urged all districts and emergency agencies to stay alert throughout September until the monsoon season concludes. He appealed to Char Dham pilgrims to plan their journeys carefully according to weather forecasts.

The cloudburst caused flash floods and landslides, leading to significant damage to infrastructure and displacing families. Relief camps have been established, and search operations are underway amid challenging conditions.
