The sudden passing of actor Robo Shankar, who had reportedly been undergoing treatment for jaundice, has deeply impacted the film industry and his fans alike. His untimely death has brought renewed attention to the seriousness of jaundice, a condition often underestimated until it leads to severe complications.

Let’s take a closer look at how jaundice can affect the body, what causes it, and the ways it can be treated or prevented.

What Is Jaundice?

Jaundice is primarily identified by the yellowing of the skin and eyes, caused by a rise in bilirubin levels in the blood. While often a symptom of an underlying issue rather than a disease itself, it can signal serious health conditions related to the liver, blood cell breakdown, or even reactions to certain medications.

Common Symptoms Of Jaundice

  • Fever, fatigue, nausea
  • Upper abdominal pain
  • Dark-coloured urine
  • Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes

5 Major Causes Of Jaundice

  1. Liver Infections (Hepatitis A-E): These viral infections, especially Hepatitis A, directly impair liver function, disrupting the processing of bilirubin. Inflammation of the liver due to such infections can lead to high bilirubin levels and visible jaundice. Other liver-related conditions like cirrhosis and autoimmune disorders can also be contributing factors.
  2. Rapid Breakdown of Red Blood Cells (Haemolysis): When red blood cells are destroyed faster than normal, due to infections, autoimmune disorders, or drug reactions, bilirubin levels rise, and the liver may not be able to cope, leading to jaundice.
  3. Bile Duct Obstruction: Blockages caused by gallstones, tumours, or inflammation can prevent the normal flow of bile, resulting in a build-up of bilirubin in the bloodstream.
  4. Alcohol-Induced Liver Damage: Prolonged and excessive alcohol consumption damages liver cells and may result in chronic liver diseases like cirrhosis. This impairs the liver’s ability to process bilirubin effectively.
  5. Medications, Toxins, and Other Factors: Certain drugs (like paracetamol in high doses), steroids, or exposure to harmful chemicals can lead to liver damage. In addition, genetic disorders, hormonal changes during pregnancy, and some types of cancer may also interfere with bilirubin metabolism.

How To Stay Safe From Jaundice And Hepatitis A

  • Get Vaccinated: The Hepatitis A vaccine is highly effective and recommended for both children and adults.
  • Consume Safe Food and Water: Use boiled or bottled water, avoid undercooked or street food, and maintain food safety practices.
  • Follow Hygiene Practices: Always wash hands with soap, especially before meals and after using the toilet.
  • Avoid Sharing Personal Items: Do not share utensils, food, or drinks, especially with someone who is ill.

Jaundice is a preventable condition, but when left untreated, it can become life-threatening. Early symptoms should never be ignored. If you or a loved one experiences any warning signs, it’s essential to seek prompt medical attention.
