The project was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the Red Fort on August 15 with a 2035 deadline. Top government sources told News18 that India will cover all vital installations like ISRO, nuclear power plants and its borders with Mission Sudarshan Chakra. The subject was discussed at this week’s Combined Commanders’ Conference too.

The committee formed by defence minister Rajnath Singh will come up with a realistic ambit of Mission Sudarshan Chakra, given the significant cost of such a project. A phase-wise approach will be followed, giving priority to the most critical areas, top government sources said.

PM Modi from Red Fort had said that he wanted to expand the national security shield, strengthen it, and modernise it. “Hence, taking inspiration from Lord Shri Krishna, we have chosen the path of the Sudarshan Chakra,” the Prime Minister said, recalling the Mahabharata’s account of Krishna blocking the sun with his Sudarshan Chakra to make it dark during the day. The idea gained urgency during Operation Sindoor, when the need for a more robust system to counter multiple layers of aerial threats became evident.

India will develop an indigenous air defence system by 2035, not just to neutralise enemy attacks but also to hit back strongly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his Independence Day address on August 15. The project was announced on the eve of Krishna Jayanti. Mission Sudarshan Chakra is likely to form part of a multi-layer strategy, operating alongside current systems like Akash, S-400, and QR-SAM, as well as future laser-based interceptors, to provide overlapping protection against short-, medium-, and long-range threats—effectively functioning as an umbrella defence network.
