Those opting NPS will get NPS benefits and a differential 4% contribution amount

The postal department on Thursday announced that its employees will now have an option to switch from Unified Pension Scheme to the National Pension Scheme (NPS).
According to the Department of Posts, the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare notified the Central Civil Services (Implementation of the Unified Pension Scheme under the National Pension System) Rules, 2025, through publication in the Gazette on September 2.

The rules are applicable for employees of the Department of Posts who have opted for UPS under the NPS.
As per the rules, those included in the UPS will be allowed to switch to NPS only once and cannot switch back to UPS. The switch can be exercised at least one year before superannuation or three months before VRS. The switch facility will not be allowed in case of removal, dismissal or compulsory retirement as a penalty or for cases where disciplinary proceedings are ongoing or contemplated.
The rules further stated that those who do not opt for the switch within the stipulated time will continue under UPS. Those opting NPS will get NPS benefits and a differential 4% contribution amount.
According to The Indian Express, the central government employees have till September 30 to opt for the Unified Pension Scheme under the National Pension System, which was approved by the Cabinet last August and came into effect from April 1 this year.
