His first great romance was with Lola Van Wagenen, who he married in 1958 and went on to welcome four children together – Scott, Shauna, James, and Amy.However, tragedy struck the family after Scott died as an infant in 1959, while James, a filmmaker and activist, passed away in 2020 after a long illness.Redford and Lola’s three decade-long marriage crumbled over time and the couple amicably parted ways in 1985. After the separation, Redford poured himself into work and creative expression. But his personal life took a turn for the better when he met German painter Sibylle Szaggars. While they began as friends, the two grew close and went on to officially wed in 2009 in a quiet ceremony in Germany.
