A senior official at a government hospital in West Bengal’s East Midnapore district has been arrested following serious allegations of rape and threats made by several female staff members.

The accused, identified as Zahir Abbas Khan, was working as the facility manager at the hospital. The incident took place at the Panskura Super Speciality Hospital.

According to police, multiple female staffers, all of whom are employed on a contractual basis as ward attendants, have come forward with complaints. They allege that Khan used to call them to his office under various pretexts, where he raped them. They further claimed that he threatened to kill them or have them dismissed from their jobs if they reported the matter, NDTV reported.

The case came to light after one of the women filed a complaint at the Panskura police station. Based on the initial report, Khan was arrested and is expected to be produced in court later today.

Police officials confirmed that several survivors have demanded the strictest punishment for Khan. They said the investigation is ongoing and more statements are being recorded.

So far, the hospital administration has not issued any official statement regarding the matter. However, public outrage is growing. Local residents staged a protest outside the police station demanding justice and accountability.

The incident has also taken a political turn. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleged that the accused had significant political backing, suggesting indirect ties to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Meanwhile in response, TMC leader Sheikh Samir Uddin denied any connection, stating that Khan was a fraud who misused the party’s name for personal gain. He condemned the incident and called for severe punishment, describing the matter as “shameful.”
