Marking its 77th Raising Day as ‘IPS Day’, the National Police Academy in Hyderabad paid a special tribute to the rich legacy of the Indian Police Service on Monday.

On the historic occasion, the National Police Academy (NPA) sought and received the blessings of HM Joshi, the only surviving member of the first IPS batch of 1948.

Joshi’s message was conveyed to the academy through an initiative coordinated by former NPA director Rajgopal, a 1965-batch IPS officer, so as to ensure that the current generation remains connected to its founding legacy.

“I wish all the IPS officers of the country a happy 77 anniversary. Keep the flag flying high,” Joshi’s message read.

Blessings were also sought from JS Bajwa, a 1949-batch IPS officer from the Punjab cadre, who will be 100 years old next year in February.

The prestigious Indian Police Service (IPS) completed 76 years after it came into existence in 1948. The central police training college was initially established on September 15, 1948, at Rajasthan’s Mount Abu.

This location served as the training ground for IPS officers for nearly two decades. In 1967, the institution was renamed as the National Police Academy to reflect its expanded role in police training across India.

In 1974, the academy was renamed to honour India’s first deputy prime minister and home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in recognition of his contributions to establishing the All India Services. In 1975, it was relocated to Hyderabad, a move that provided it with extensive facilities and resources.
