Former Trinamool Congress MP and actress Mimi Chakraborty on Monday appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for questioning regarding her involvement in an alleged illegal betting app. ED is conducting a probe related to an “illegal” betting app named 1xBet.

On Sunday, ED issued summons to Urvashi Rautela and Mimi Chakraborty. While Chakraborty appeared today for questioning, Rautela has been asked to depose on Tuesday.

Mimi Chakraborty Questioned By ED

36-year-old Mimi Chakraborty’s statement is being recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). As per a report by PTI, ED is questioning Chakraborty to understand her links with the betting app as she is linked through certain endorsements and financial transactions.

ED is investigating several cases involving illegal betting apps that are alleged to have duped numerous people and investors worth crores of rupees or have evaded a huge amount of taxes.

Former cricketers Suresh Raina and Shikhar Dhawan have been questioned previously. On September 4, Dhawan was questioned for approximately eight hours.

Reportedly, the summons are being issued to several celebrities to understand their links with the betting apps, any endorsement fee earned and the mode of communication between them.

In the recent legislation, the Central government has imposed a ban on real-money online gaming.

A PTI report shared estimates by market analysis firms and probe agencies and stated there are about 22 crore Indian users in various such online betting apps out of which half (about 11 crore) are regular users.
