Delhi’s 235-Year-Old Sweet Shop Was A Hit With Mughals And India’s First President Was A Fan!

Tucked away in the bustling lanes of Chandni Chowk, Delhi, lies a 235-year-old sweet shop that has withstood the test of time – a relic from the Mughal era. Once known simply by the bell that hangs outside its entrance, the shop has earned the nickname ‘Shahi Ghanta Wali Mithai‘, meaning ‘The Sweet with the Royal Bell’. Today, it’s officially known as Jain Snacks Corner.

This is believed to be the only surviving sweet shop in Chandni Chowk from the time of the Mughals. Legend has it that Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II was so fond of the sweets here that he would send royal elephants to fetch them. His instructions were simple: “Bring sweets from the shop with the bell.”

A Presidential Stamp Of Approval

This shop’s fame didn’t end with the Mughals. India’s first President, Dr Rajendra Prasad, was also said to be a devoted fan of the sweets in this shop. In fact, the shop catered for his events, and he later awarded them a letter of appreciation, which, even today, remains proudly displayed inside the shop.

Eighth Generation Of Sweet-Makers

Shalabh Jain, the eighth-generation owner of this historic shop, shares that his family established the business in 1790. Over two centuries later, the iconic bell still hangs at the entrance – a symbol of its royal roots and enduring legacy.

Although it began as a traditional sweet shop, Jain Snacks Corner now attracts large crowds for its rabri, lassi, falooda, juices, and an ever-expanding range of desserts.

On weekends, the shop is so packed that there’s hardly any space to stand, and a wait of at least five minutes is common.

Sweet Treats For Everyone – Even Diabetics

What makes this shop truly stand out is its inclusive menu. From sugar-free rabri and kulfi to diabetic-friendly falooda and juices, the shop caters to all kinds of customers.

Wrestlers and food lovers alike frequent the shop, particularly for the Kaju Shake, which is a crowd favourite.

All sweets and desserts are made in-house, using buffalo milk sourced from outside. From traditional malai rabri to experimental flavours like chocolate, Oreo, and even Panch Tatva Rabri, there’s something for everyone.
