The vibrant vigour, rhythmic incantations, and age-old myths that surround these temples make them an integral part of India’s spiritual odyssey. From hilltop temples to ancient temples, there is a unique experience attached to each temple, making them favourite destinations during the festival season.

Vaishno Devi Temple, Jammu & Kashmir

One of India’s most sacred pilgrimages, the Vaishno Devi Temple is located within the Trikuta Mountains. The devotees undertake a steep hill trek or ride ponies up to the cave shrine. “Jai Mata Di” chants are heard ringing across the hills as one is immersed in a very spiritual environment. The breathtaking views from the top enhance the temple’s beauty.

Dakshineswar Kali Temple, West Bengal

Situated on the banks of the Hooghly River in Kolkata, this temple is of Goddess Kali, a fierce avatar of Durga. Constructed during the 19th century by Rani Rashmoni, its beautiful architecture and riverside location make it a place one must not miss. The temple also has strong connections with Saint Ramakrishna Paramhansa.

Kamakhya Temple, Assam

Located in Guwahati, Kamakhya Temple is among the most influential Shakti Peethas. Devotees consider it to be an embodiment of divine feminine power. Its Ambubachi Mela festival every year attracts thousands of pilgrims and provides a spiritual experience like no other.

Jwala Devi Temple, Himachal Pradesh

Unlike other temples, Jwala Devi Temple in Kangra Valley does not contain an idol. The goddess is instead revered in the form of centuries-long burning flames. This is a unique phenomenon that makes the temple mysterious as well as sacred.

Chamundeshwari Temple, Karnataka

Sitting atop Chamundi Hills in Mysuru, this temple, dating back 1,000 years, is a monument of architecture and worship. The pilgrims ascend 1,000 steps to the shrine and are greeted with spectacular views of Mysuru and beautiful carvings on the entrance of the temple.

Kalighat Temple, West Bengal

In the heart of Kolkata lies Kalighat Temple, one of the most important Shakti Peethas. It is believed to mark the spot where Goddess Sati’s right toe fell. The temple’s bustling environment reflects both the devotion of visitors and the lively spirit of Kolkata.

Mahalakshmi Temple, Maharashtra

Found in Kolhapur, the Mahalakshmi Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas and is also referred to as Ambabai Temple. The temple is considered a focal point of spirituality with its detailed carvings and a vast history, drawing pilgrims throughout the year.

Karni Mata Temple, Rajasthan

Possibly the strangest of them all, Bikaner’s Karni Mata Temple is famous for its thousands of resident rats, which are revered as sacred. The rare sight of a white rat among them is considered auspicious.

These temples, with their own distinct histories and traditions, are a testament to India’s strong cultural and spiritual heritage. Navratri 2025 provides the perfect chance for pilgrims and tourists alike to discover these revered sites.
