President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet the Qatari Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, in New York on Friday, a White House official confirmed. The meeting comes just days after Israel launched an attack targeting Hamas leaders in Doha, Qatar.

The official did not provide further details on the timing or agenda of the meeting.

On Tuesday, Israel attempted to kill political leaders of Hamas in Qatar. The strike threatened to derail US-backed efforts to broker a truce in Gaza and end the nearly two-year conflict. The attack drew widespread condemnation across the Middle East and beyond, with many warning it could further escalate tensions in an already fragile region.

Trump expressed his unhappiness with Israel’s strike, describing it as a unilateral action that did not serve the interests of either the US or Israel.

In addition to Trump’s meeting, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will also meet with the Qatari Prime Minister at the White House on Friday, the State Department confirmed. Rubio, who also serves as Trump’s national security advisor, is set to discuss the recent developments and ongoing peace efforts.

Qatar has been a key intermediary in the Gaza conflict and hosts a US military base. Following the attack, Trump distanced the US from Israel’s actions, stating that his administration had tried to prevent the strike but learned about it too late.

Qatari Prime Minister Al-Thani has voiced strong outrage over the Israeli attack, saying it destroyed hopes for a ceasefire and the release of hostages held by Hamas. However, he reaffirmed that Qatar would continue its diplomatic efforts to mediate peace in the region.

Al-Thani is currently in New York to attend an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting, convened in response to the strike. Speaking to the Council on Friday, he pledged that Qatar would persist with its humanitarian and diplomatic role to end the violence.

“We will continue our humanitarian and diplomatic role without hesitation, in order to stop the bloodshed,” he said, while also indicating a reassessment of Qatar’s mediation efforts following the recent attack.
