Manchester United continue facing uncertainty over Fernandes despite midfielder’s commitment to Old Trafford

Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes, who has been Manchester United’s captain since 2023, was linked to a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia earlier this summer. The Red Devils, however, firmly insisted that the midfielder was not for sale, with the 31-year-old later later telling the club he wanted to stay.

After making some major signings in the summer transfer window, Manchester United will be turning their focus to the 2025-26 season, in which the ‘Red Devils’ aren’t exactly off to an ideal start.

The Old Trafford board, after all, will keen to see whether the fortune that they have spent on rebuilding the squad as per manager Ruben Amorim’s needs leads to an improvement in their on-field performances or not, with the Portuguese coach’s job possibly on the line.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

The latest reports, however, suggest that United also have one eye on the winter transfer window less than two weeks after the lapse of the summer deadline, with January still three-and-a-half months away.

Not only do United, who had finished an abysmal 15th last season, have their sights set on Crystal Palace midfielder and Chelsea target Adam Wharton for the winter transfer window, they could lose part ways with star midfielder Bruno Fernandes in January.

Fernandes, who has been United captain since 2023, had been linked to a move to Saudi Arabia during the summer with Al-Hilal reportedly offering him £700,000 per week – which would have made him one of the highest-paid footballers in the world.

Saudi move still on for Fernandes

United, however, had made it clear that the 31-year-old, whose contract runs till 2027, will not be leaving Old Trafford anytime soon, with Fernandes also telling the club that he wanted to stay.

A move to the Saudi Pro League next year, however, remains on the cards for Fernandes, possibly as early as January, according to TBRFootball. The report adds that the Saudi club is still prepared to shell out ‘good money’ for him, believing that he is “far from settled” at United despite the English giants’ insistence otherwise.

And with the FIFA World Cup set to take place in the US, Mexico and Canada next year, Fernandes has also been given the assurance that a move to the Gulf Kingdom will not affect his place in the Portugal team.
