In India, no such restriction exists under law or government regulation. Instead, it is determined by private business policy, giving owners or managers the authority to decide whether guests may sit without placing an order.

Typically, it is considered inappropriate to remain in a restaurant without ordering, as the primary purpose of such establishments is to serve food and drinks. For instance, one may be allowed to wait briefly while meeting friends or family, though even this is usually subject to time limits and management discretion.

What Exactly Happened With Virat and Anushka?

Currently enjoying a quieter life in London, the celebrity couple’s cafe experience came to light during a candid conversation by Indian cricketer Jemimah Rodrigues. Speaking to Mashable India, she recalled how, during a tour, she and teammate Smriti Mandhana spent hours in discussion with Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma, which eventually led to them being asked to leave a cafe in New Zealand.

Rodrigues explained that she and Mandhana were seeking Kohli’s advice on batting. The interaction began with cricket talk but soon turned into a casual chat when the couple invited them to a cafe at the hotel where both the men’s and women’s teams were staying. She recounted, “He actually told Smriti and me that you both have the power to change women’s cricket, and I can see that happening.”

Their conversation stretched for nearly four hours. At that point, the cafe staff approached them and politely asked them to vacate the table, as they had been occupying the seats for too long without continuing to order.

Such incidents highlight that while restaurants may not strictly enforce such rules, private policies often dictate how long a guest can remain. For public figures like Kohli and Anushka Sharma, the experience may have been surprising, but it underscores the universal nature of hospitality guidelines.
