A 21-year-old woman, who was a vegetarian, allegedly ended her life in Amroha district after her husband cooked chicken against her wishes, said officials on Friday.

Police said the incident occurred on August 20 in Vanshiwala village, when Reena’s husband, Nigam Singh (24), allegedly cooked chicken despite her objections.

During interrogation, Nigam admitted he was drunk that night and later claimed to have found his wife hanging.

Instead of reporting the matter, police allege Nigam, along with his brother Mahkar and cousin Bijendra, wrapped the body in cloth and dumped it in the Ganga, three kilometres away, before lodging a missing complaint.

Reena’s family, however, has accused the in-laws of harassing her for dowry and claimed she was murdered.

Acting on a complaint by Reena’s mother, Kaushalya, police registered a case under BNS section 80 (dowry death) and 238 (destruction of evidence) against Nigam, his parents, Mahkar, and Bijendra.

On Thursday, police arrested Nigam, Mahkar, and Bijendra, and recovered a dupatta believed to have been used in the incident.

Efforts are underway to trace the body and apprehend the remaining accused, officials said.

In a separate incident, a 29-year-old woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district allegedly strangled her three young daughters before dying by suicide, police said on Wednesday.

The incident took place in Tikri town, where the woman, identified as Tej Kumari alias Maya, reportedly acted after frequent quarrels at home.

According to police, she was upset that her husband, Vikas Kashyap, had grown distant and that their children were not being admitted to a private school.

The victims were girls aged four months, two years, and seven years. At the time of the incident, Maya’s husband — a Delhi-based tourist bus operator — was sleeping outside the house under a tree, police said.
