Israeli-Russian academic Elizabeth Tsurkov, who had been held hostage in Iraq, was freed in exchange for a top Hezbollah operative, as per Iranian media reports. Israel released two members of Iran-linked militia groups, among them Imad Amhaz, a top Hezbollah naval operative, Tasnim news agency reported. The Israeli military reportedly considered Amhaz as a “significant source of knowledge” in Hezbollah naval force. He was captured in a daring Israeli naval operation conducted in northern Lebanon in early November last year.Meanwhile, Elizabeth Tsurkov, the academic who was swapped for Amhaz, arrived in Israel on Sept. 8. She was released more than two years after her kidnapping in Baghdad in March 2023. The US president said Tsurkov was released by the powerful pro-Iran Kataeb Hezbollah group even as Baghdad said “outlaws” kidnapped her.Tsurkov, a doctoral student at Princeton University, had likely entered Iraq on her Russian passport as part of her doctoral studies. n18oc_world n18oc_crux0:00 INTRODUCTION1:54 IRAN HARDLINERS SLAM DEAL WITH IAEA6:12 “US HAS NO REGARD EVEN FOR ITS OWN ALLIES”
