The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Thursday said they have recovered the weapon used to assassinate conservative, right-wing activist and commentator Charlie Kirk.Meanwhile, Utah law enforcement officials investigating the case said they have good video footage of the killer but cannot release the footage now, while addressing the same press conference.

Robert Bohls, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Salt Lake City field office, told reporters that the weapon is a “high-powered, bolt action rifle” recovered from the “wooded area where the shooter had fled”.

Earlier, Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason, who first spoke to the reporters at the press conference, said that the investigation has made “a few breakthroughs”, including being able to track the shooter’s movements, according to broadcasters BBC and CNN.

“We do have good video footage of this individual. We are not going to release that at this time,” Mason said, adding the suspect arrived on the campus of Utah Valley University at 11:52 am (local time).

He further added that the suspect “blended in well in the university setting and appears to be of college age”. The FBI official said that investigators believe the suspect is male, according to the US broadcaster CNN.

“We will not stand for what happened yesterday,” Mason said. “We are exhausting every lead; we have every officer invested in this, every investigator, every local agency.”

“We will catch this individual. We are working through some technologies and some ways to identify this individual,” he said, adding that “we are confident in our abilities right now.”

Bohls, meanwhile, urged the public to reach out if they have videos and images that could help the investigation.

He said that investigators collected a footwear impression, a palm print, and forearm imprints.

Kirk was shot in the neck while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. Video from the scene showed him addressing a large crowd when a single shot rang out.

The father-of-two collapsed in his chair before sounds of panic erupted in the audience.
